World Mental Health Day

06 October 2022

World Mental Health Day is happening on 10th October 2022. This year’s theme is ‘make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’, empowering governments, organisations, and ourselves as individuals to play a part in raising awareness of mental health and preventative interventions. With that, we explore what World Mental Health Day is and the relationship between medical cannabis and mental health.

World Mental Health Day-What is it?

World Mental Health Day is held annually on the 10th October. First celebrated in 1992, it internationally recognises and advocates for mental health education, awareness and reduction of social stigma. For many, this day has opened up the conversation on mental health and how important it is to look after it, as well as how to go about seeking help.

The theme for World Mental Health Day changes every year. For 2022, the theme is ‘make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’. Over the course of the year, many things have potentially challenged aspects of our mental health, not least the pandemic. Unsurprisingly, no nation was prepared for COVID-19 and the resultant global crisis in mental health. As well as this, rising social and economic inequalities have affected access to mental health care.

However, it isn’t all doom and gloom.

Increasingly, evidence shows that prevention of mental ill health is a possibility through general and targeted evidence-based interventions. Therefore, this year’s theme encourages us all to put mental health high up on the agenda and embrace awareness in every aspect of our lives, be this at home, at work or on social media.

Mental Health and Medical Cannabis

Approximately one in four people in the UK experience mental ill health every year, and when traditional treatments fail, many turn to alternative methods. Studies suggest that medical cannabis can help to address PTSD, anxiety, depression and insomnia.

Medical cannabis can help with calming nerves and relaxation, as well as the processing of emotions, such as fear and stress. This helps to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from these conditions, allowing them to live a happy and healthy life.
